Perge is located in the east side of Antalya and about 19 kilometers to Antalya. Pamphlia means 'The Country of All Clans'. It is named as Pamphlia when the Greek clans settled in this area after the Truva War. The Pamphlia Civilization played a major role in establishment and development of Perge, Silyon, Aspendos, Side and Attalia. Perge had been the core of Pamphlia. Its founders were Mopsosand Kaekhos, however, the living spirit of Perge was Artemis, the goddess.
The figure of Artemis had always been embroided over the sikkes which are the civilization signets of Perge and over the baitylos motifs. As Perge developed in city planning, and as it gained success economically and socially, The Moon Princess Artemis Pergaida also took place over the sikkes of the neighbouring settlement places suchas Attalia, Selge, Ismda etc. Gaining a reasonable amount of money from the votive offerings of the faithful, The Artemis Pargeida Temple couldn't abstain from the loot of Verres who is a Roman administrator. In spite of this loot, Perge rose to 'Asylia', the immunity stage of the Antique Era(A.D 2nd century). By the votive offerings of a rich lady called Plancia Magna, the city enjoyed its prosperity period. And by the 3rd century (A.D) it gained the name right of "Neokoros Temple's Watchman" besides 'Aslylia'.
The written history of Perge starts with Iskender. During his visit to Perge in 333 (B.C), Iskender, seized the control of the place and used the place as a base city. The Pergian guides guided Iskender during his attacks and pillages around the region. The Pergamon Kingdom choosed Attalia as its basis city instead of Perge.
The Mathematician Apollonlonios (B.C 3rd cc) and the philosophist Varus (A.D 2nd cc) were the most famous scientists of Perge. The Pergian constructions, give us clues of their progress in city planning and architecture. 'What had happened to the Artemis Temple?' is still a mystery.
